The light is so bright, the air so clear, that the mountains are nothing but a gray ridge on the horizon. Clouds crouch low in the distance, shining mother of pearl colors in the winter sun. His hands are relaxed on the wheel, and she is quiet in her car seat, small face composed as she gazes out over the snow-covered fields. Hand wrapped around the comforting warmth of my coffee, I let my breaths slow with the rise and fall of the road as we climb into the hills, my mind at ease.
