The Word was born of a desire to present God’s word with the same passion and beauty of cathedrals of the past. With the Schism came the idea that modesty meant lack — abnegation of the human love of beauty in favor of simplicity and humility. While I agree that these are important values and that the corruption of the church in the time of Martin Luther deserved to be stopped, I don’t agree that humility demands that we put aside the creativity we were endowed with.
I have loved beauty since my earliest childhood. As a Christian, I often felt guilt for this innately held value, wishing that I desired to pursue medicine instead. Medicine is obviously valuable. It’s giving. It’s needed.
But beauty is needed in ways just as profound, though much more subtle. The Lord gives us the desires of our hearts. He places them there intentionally, along with our talents. The Word is part of my ongoing endeavor to use the talents and desires He gave me to glorify His name.
